Will I have to take out my belly button ring when I have an abdominal ultrasound!

Question: I'm going to have an ultrasound of my abdomen. I have a navel piercing and it is my second one because the first closed up after removing the ring for only a few hours. I'm afraid I will have to take it out for the ultrasound and won't get it back in. Any tips or ideas on what to do??

A belly button ring should not interfere with an abdominal ultrasound. If for some strange reason it does, the ultrasound technologist will ask you to remove the ring. Should it be necessary to remove the ring, it would only be for about 5-10 minutes....not enough time for the piercing to close.

For an abdominal ultrasound, we image the pancreas, liver, gallbladder, common bile duct, both kidneys, spleen, aorta and vena cava and urinary bladder. None of these organs lie under your belly button. We would find small intestines directly below your belly button, however, we cannot use ultrasound to image the intestines due to interference from bowel gases.

Probably, just to insure there is no interaction with the picture and the metal. Just take it out when you get there and put it right back in when finished.

No, not at all. If they suggest so, then it is at the discretion of the person who is performing the test. Shouldn't get in the way, unless it's the size of a belt-buckle.

Best of luck!

Ask the tecnician performing the procedure. They'll likely want it out before they begin. Ultra sounds take very little time, so it's doubtful you'll close up that quickly.

No I didn't when I was pregnant.(However saying that when I got really big the hole the ring went in burst anywayIf they insist just put surgical tape over it instead.
