Broken florescent light bulb on my head?!


Question: i was working tonight and a florescent light bulb shattered and pieces of it went flying on me and some got in my hair. (none in my eyes that i can remember) i heard that these light bulbs contain mercury or some sort of dangerous stuff. my scalp sort of burned but i dont know if thats just me worrying or if it really does burn. i washed my hair as soon as i got home, am i going to be ok?

Yes, florescent light bulbs do contain mercury, put in a gas form. You don't want to breath the stuff. Your head should be okay for now. As long as it wasn't on your head for to long you should be okay too. Mercury can be handled no problem, but it can cause cancer. Just make sure you wash thoroughly. Pay attention to your scalp and if there is anymore burning pain you should probably go see a doctor. When showering use cold water. It will stop the burning the fastest and stabilize your scalp.

Fluorescent tubes do contain a small amount of mercury, so sweep up the mess and then take a bath. No need to do anything else.
