The more relaxed you are, the less tense your arm will be, thus less painful. Also, to make your veins bigger (thus less painful a stick) drink a lot of water and stay warm. When veins are hard to find, I always used to put a heating pad on the arm. Don't stress. Get some excersize right before (increases blood flow and vein size) right before you go in. It's just a split secong of pain, but the tests are so important! Good luck w/ the results!

I had one last year and I didn't even know they had done it. All of a sudden it was over as I was looking another way. If I had not seen the vial I would not have believed it. It depends on how skilled they are at it.

Drink water. I call it "superhydration." If you know that you are going to have blood drawn, make sure your urine is clear before you go. It makes it a lot easier to have blood drawn. Frankly, a lot of it depends on the technician.

You know, in all my years as a nurse I don't think I've ever met anyone who actually liked getting poked with a needle. It's not like there is a group of folks out there that volunteer to be stuck unless there is a valid need, and should I ever meet up with somebody who does, I likely would refuse to do it. Seriously, we are talking a small needle here, not a shotgun. As hurts go, it's way down on the list. I'd put it below stubbing a toe or mashing a finger for certain, probably even below cramps. At most it's usually only a momentary poke, and then it's done with. Pain is for the interpretation of the person, and how bad you think it should feel. If you convince yourself it's going to be excruciating, then it likely will be miserable. And if you don't look, for some reason, you might discover it hurts a lot less than you expect, if for no other reason than you can't anticipate the poke. But if you are insistent that you simply must look, then you will just have to grit your teeth and bear it. If you have any practice with meditation, sometimes that helps you get control of the breathing and calm yourself. But really, for the quick stick a blood test requires, it seems to me a lot of hooey over a little thing. Perhaps if you made a list of things that are really frightening, and then read over that before they do the test, you could remind yourself exactly where this fits on the scale of scarey things. Or go see some poor kid who's seriously ill, one who is too young to understand why all the pokes and sticks, and then decide how bad it is. At least you are old enough to understand, and you will only get stuck once. Gives one poke a whole new look, huh?

"weii , i'm not a doctor or nurse but i find when your about to have a shot or needle lieing down will relax you and i ? from alan tiger . "
