What would cause foot to turn red?!

Question: my daughter hurt her foot about a month ago. the doctor diagnossed it as being a torn leagment. i think she was pretending. (she is a very good actress) they wrapped it in an ace bandage, gave her crutches & sent her home. after a day or so she was fine. now over the weekend we asked her to clean her room. all of a sudden her foot hurts. she was doing nothing but watching tv. she wrapped it all up & hopped around. when she took the bandage off, the top of her foot was red & a little puffy. what would cause that? she was in the bathroom for a min before she hollored for us to come & look at her foot. it looks to me like she smacked it a few times. it felt warm. she lies alot & is a big faker so it is hard to tell if she is being truthful. she is 15

Well, redness and puffiness +/- heat are not very specific signs, but it suggests a number of things (we'll assume that there is no faking involved here).

1. She may indeed have damaged the soft tissues in her foot, which may have improved with bandages and resting it. The foot could suddenly have become worse again if she strained it with a certain movements that pulled the involved areas.

2. She may have an infection of the soft tissues (generally known as cellulitis). While this is a common condition, it's not something that tends to come and go of its own accord, and generally requires antibiotics to treat.

3. It could be something else. There are enough conditions out there that could give vague symptoms like this, and they are too many to begin going through here.

Bottom line: If you are concerned there is a possibility of something going on, get it checked out. Better to rule out any likelihood of something serious than to ignore it and then possibly regret it later.

im not sure, ive got a daughter like that too and she is only six. i would say its maybe just because shes hurt it when you have a torn ligament it can take a while to stop aching, idont know about the redness maybe you could phone your doctor and ask for some advise im sure they will be happy to help.

Bandage! I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and in the past have wrapped a bandage around my wrist, elbow, knee, especially if I knew I was about to dig a hole, mow the lawn, cut some wood, in hope that the joint would not rebel. It worked, the joint did not rebel, but on taking the bandage off, the area was all red and puffy. Reason being I wrapped the bandage too tight, cut some of the circulation off! This is why they state: Plaster cast, if you notice the toes going blue return to the Hospital, because the foot has swollen and the plaster cast becomes too tight. I recently read that babies are being taken to the Doc with the same symptoms and it is due to the socks, the elastic is cutting into the ankle, called infantile sock syndrome. Good Luck
