Is it dangerous to have an MRI when you have metal plates and a rod in your spin!

Question: Just wondering, if others have heard anything about this because my dr. wants an MRI and I have a herrington rod in my upper back, and have a fusion plate in my neck. (c7)

I just read in a drs forum that people with such hardware should NOT have an MRI but instead have an EMG???
(Due to the magnetic pull)

I asked my doctor about this because 9 years ago, when I had an MRI done I couldnt stop coughing!
I told the new dr about this and he said
that if it started bothering me during theMRI to tell the technician to stop the test and that we would try something else....
opinions please???
.

My daughter had a belly button ring that was causing all sorts of distortion on the results and she had to take it out. I would imagine having metal inside your body would also cause the pictures not to be their best. Surely, there must be another way to get the test results they want without using an MRI.

I don't think it will hurt you, but the metal definitely interferes with the clarity of the results.
