Has anyone had a neurological consult?!

Question: I am being referred to a neurologist for back pain. Could someone tell me what kind of stuff they do during a neurological consultation?

During the consult they will take a complete medical history, when the pain started, due to an accident etc. They will touch your back to see your reaction to the pain. Then they will probably order tests like x-rays, MRI, PET, or EMG to further help with the diagnosis. Ask them to fully explain what the test is and what it does.

I had a friend that went to one, but they mostly deal with the spin and brain.

I had to see a neurologist for Migranes. They basically do cat scans and mri's to see if it is a nerve condition causing the discomfort. None of the test are that bad but it can get expensive

I have had back surgery so I know a little about it. First they do a complete medical history, they will ask you what led up to the problem with your back, then they do an exam, this usually entails touching in areas for pain, checking the movement of your legs and how you bend your back. Usually by the time you get to a neurologist you have all ready had the x-rays and probably an MRI. I found that asking a lot of questions about the back will help you understand what is going on.

They will talk to you and do a lot of testing to see your range of motion, what causes the pain, where the pains are, when you feel the pain. Then if needed they will schedule tests like MRI's ENG's.

My mom went to literally dozens of consults when her neck started bothering her; residual pain from a car accident decades ago when she was a teenager.

Basically, the doctors will ask a lot of questions in an attempt to discover the root of the problem, will look for pressure points along your spine to see your reactions while asking you "how did that feel?" If you see a really good neurologist, he/she may take xrays of your spinal structure, a CATscan to see if your pain is the result of something in your brain, or an MRI to see if it's something musculo-skeletally. (is that a word?)

My mom ended up setting an appointment with her neurologist for injections of a cortocosteroid into her neck to deaden/numb the nerves there that were causing her pain. Unfortunately, it was a quick fix, and needs to be repeated every month. She's now scheduled for an all out operation to kill the culprit nerves.

I hope your pain can be remedied more easily! Good luck and don't stress it. They're there to make you feel better, after all!

I had a NCT or Nerve Conduct Test, so too which nerves are working, which were not and what if any were misfiring. Good Luck
