I have recently also had long term trouble with my knee. I finally saw a orthopedic and after MRI's he told me that I had bone swelling after partially dislocating my knee cap (I didn't even remember doing it). He said it'll take 4 months to completely recover.

It sounds like you need to see an orthopedic also. X-rays probably won't tell you much, an MRI will be necessary to figure out the problem. It could be anything from a torn ligament or miniscus to something as simple as hyperextension or swelling. The knee is tricky and takes awhile to heal in many cases. Only an MRI will tell you what's going on there.

Hmm, as the veteran of about 8 knee surgeries and many knee injuries, I say that you should probably get a second opinion and possibly an MRI of the joint. Does it hurt more going up or down the stairs? Does it swell? I would avoid the actvities that hurt (the body's signal there is a problem) and try non weight bearing exercises like swimming and stationary bike to keep active. Keep it elevated and ice if it continues to hurt. Good luck!
