How can I ask my doctor for painkillers and not seem like a young drug addict?!

Question: I have crippling back pains 24/7, to the point that it's often too difficult to get out of my chair or even bed, so I can't move. So I obviously want to ask for painkillers, but the problem is that I'm a 17 year old male, so no one would possibly believe me. Not even my own parents think that it's that bad, despite that they hear me scream in pain just trying to get up to go to the bathroom. Does anyone have some advice on how I can approach a doctor to get a prescription and have him believe me, not just thinking I'm a drug addict? I've tried physical therapy, heat, OTC pain killers, etc...nothing helps.

Start a daily journal of your pain.
Where it hurts
How bad it hurts
when it hurts
write down any questions you want to ask

Take that with you when you go back to the doctor and show it to him. It's hard to explain everything to them when you are nervous to begin with.

This is the best way I have heard of to deal with doctors regarding pain. It was my orthopedic surgeon that told me to start doing that

Good luck

They won't believe you,
No offence but I don't either lol
Nothin wrong with painkillers yo

Wow, the doc can tell by reactions to things if you need them or are a drug seeker. Sorry I think your out of luck.

are you out of shape... get off your as s and get some exercise. My guess it your starving for attention.

maybe they need to do cat scans or mri if it is that bad there has got to be something wrong maybe you need surgery or something if regular dr can not figure it out ask to see a specialist maybe neuroligist or something

Get an x ray and eliminate all possible causes ..then if its in your head get help for that ...Doctors aren't allowed to hand over drugs without a name for your condition ...

just ask him straight up. say "Doc, my back hurts like a BI*CH and i need some strong *** pain killers."

Frankly given your age you will have a hard job, if you are trying to fake it and looking for tips then here is one, forget it, there is no way in hell a doctor will give out strong narcotic painkillers without visible signs of the problem or a scan showing an internal cause for the symptoms.

However if you actually do have a problem I sympathize (I myself had an injury to my back in a car accident while I was around that age area where it is usually just dismissed. The only thing you can really do if you have a real problem is go in to the doctor don't just say it hurts nor ask for medication, give them a complete accurate description of the symptoms (how the pain feels this can help identify what the cause is, different causes have different sensations, like burning, stabbing twisting whatever) also make sure to give full details on the progression of the symptoms (have they gotten worse or better do they ever fluctuate or change) any factors that alter the pain (cold, heat, foods, certain movements, anything at all which affects it). Also if there was anything that happened near the start of the symptoms (in the proceeding few months for a chronic injury, or days for a acute injury) be sure to mention that as well, just give all the details you can.

Giving all that information then and only then you might have a hope in hell they will even take you seriously enough to investigate it properly and not just tell you to go take some paracetamol. Of course it is unfortunate it is back pain, the most common lie people come up with to try and seek prescription drugs is "Oh doctor my back hurts sooooo bad"

tell him ya cant sleep, you kant eat..your a nervous wreck, you are intractable pain..you got aches apains galore...and you need a tonic for pain...tell him you get stomach problems from nsaids....and tylenol isnot workin......tell him you would apprciate a trial of vicodin...it will help you....you NEED IT...ask for it today! i suspect you got that addiction disorder too,,,your on vicodin now,.,,,then at 35 you ll be sportin a morphine drip,.,...nein nein....stick to asprin. unt epsin saltz!

This is my suggestion as I Started out with pain medication at a younge age but I have a very bad injury thats permnant caused by a sporting accident. And take it from some one who has started out on painkillers young.Im not sure how severe your conditon is but if this is going to be something you have to take pain medications for the rest of your life you do not want to start out with something very strong becasue you will build a tollerence there are only so many strong medications. But I almost bet you that if you go in and say to your docter I want this medication know you need to give it to me right know. What you need to do is go have a real conversation with your docter see what his/her suggestion is And they will try to help.Tell the Doc you hurt so bad just be real and if you be real and do all of there suggestions Im sure that they will provide you with something.Good luck and Im srry you are in so much pain at 17.

I am assuming you are having low back pain and not mid/upper back or thoracic back pain. Scheurmann's Kyphosis or Scheurmann's Disease is a curvature of the thoracic spine and is usually not painful. However, Sheurmann also described a lower back condition which some people inappropriately also call Scheurmann's low back disease. This condition is actually Juvenile Discogenic Disease or Disorder (JDD) and can be quite painful at times. It needs very structured preventive physical therapy and back care to prevent further disability in the future.

You will find most health care providers will be somewhat hesitant to provide significant analgesic medications, as this is a chronic and lifelong disorder, and you will develop a tolerance very young and need escalating doses of pain medications. You should, request a referral to a specialist in pain medicine, if you are having significant disability due to the pain. They may not provide you with the direct treatment you think you need, but will help you develop an approach for managing your chronic pain which allows you to function, and maximizes you benefits but also minimizes the risks.

haha im in the same boat, i broke my knee nd dislocated it but now im in pain alot, nd everybody ( parents nd docs) just think i want drugs

not much to do,
