During surgery, when they say the put a tube down your throat, what does that me!

Question: During surgery when they say they put a tube down your throat to help you breathe, does that mean they hook you up to a respirator? I imagine that would be the case as they can't hook you up to a continuous oxygen flow as it would burst your lungs, but I've never actually had it explained before. I've had numerous surgeries but never actually known!! Thankx in advance. Im having my gallbladder taken out tomorrow so wish me well!

During surgical procedures you are placed under anesthesia which suppresses your respirations. You are not able to maintain your own airway due to the anesthesia. So, a tube is placed in your throat to supply your body with oxygen during the procedure. It is taken out before you wake up. After the procedure, your throat may feel a little scratchy or sore from the tube. This should resolve without problems.

they open ur throat and insert a tube as u said but the respirator pumps oxygen in and draws it back out, just as if ur breathing in and out naturally. i had an op when i was 18,yes i felt bad after but it is soon forgotten, don't worry!! Xx

i had it done, doesnt hurt at all. although some experience a sore throat for a few days. and yes, you will have oxygen to help you breath.
