Back pain question?!

Question: I have had back pain for over two years. I finally have a MRI schedule ( got insurance now) anyways, the pain is not as severe and tingles if I touch the muscle and itches too. Why would it itch?

Hi

If you have had back pain for a couple of years you may have irritated a few nerves. The outer fibers of the nerve create what is called paraesthesia which is altered sensations - such as tingling, itching, burning etc.

When the nerve becomes more irritated then pain can develop and eventually the deepest fibers affect muscle control.

When you have back pain there is usually more than one joint involved. You may have one creating the back pain and another nearby causing the paraesthesia. Either way the MRI will show any major damage, but not the minor areas that also need fixing.

As your pain has become less severe it may also mean the problem is getting better, but you should become proactive and learn a few things you can do at home your self to help remove the problem and prevent new ones arising.

Treatment is always advisable if pain is persisting or getting worse. If you have waited 2 years before you have sought advice or help, then I assume it has not been too severe. So learn a few simple things your self and you will be amazed at how easy it is to remove back pain at home.

Itching indicates nerve involvement or it is just dry skin because it is winter. Chronic back pain is very resistant to treatment and the inflamation which goes with it can cause different sensations because of compression of nerves by the swollen soft tissue. I will hope you have good result in your MRI.
