My right knee hurts when I am walking DOWN stairs. What might be wrong?!

Question: I went hiking up a mountain on a cold day. The trail was well laid out, except that near the top there was a boardwalk over an alpine marsh, and the wood was very icy. I didn't have crampons (those metal spikes you can put on your boots) so it was very difficult going both up and down the boardwalk.

I did slip a couple of times, but nothing very serious, as I caught myself before I hit the ground.

After the boardwalk on the way down, the path was a bit rocky, and steep-ish. Near the bottom of the trail my right knee was getting kind of painful whenever I had to take a step down. However, stepping UP didn't hurt really, at all.

I thought I might have twisted my knee, so I've been taking it easy for a few weeks.

However, just the other day I had to go up and down stairs quite a bit, and my right knee started hurting again! It felt fine before, but it just doesn't like going downhill.

What might be wrong?

walking downhill is always harder on your joints than walking uphill. you may have hurt your knee, but most likely have just stressed the sensitive ligaments and they are now slightly swollen and tender. try not to aggravate your knee for a week by not running/jogging or doing any intense exercise and you will probably be just fine! if your knee starts to discolor or become noticeably swollen, see your doctor because you may have dislocated your kneecap

you might have Osteoarthritis, its basically arthritis, of the knee, but you could have,Rheumatoid Arthritis and its a type of arthritis that can destroy cartilage.
