Usually a physician will do a quick test for blood, protein, bacteria, etc. in the urine. These results are immediate (within 30 minutes). Some physicians will then put the patient on an antibiotic if they think a UTI is present.

Then the urine is "cultured", i.e., placed in a Petri dish of agar and kept at body temperature to see what bacteria will grow. This can take at least 48 hours. This is done because different bacteria are susceptible to different kinds of antibiotics.

If your quick urinalysis didn't show any infection, your physician may be waiting for culture results so he/she can choose the right antibiotics. However, your pain seems significant.

My suggestion is that you contact your physician and tell him/her that the pain is significant. You don't mention where the pain is, so I hesitate to recommend urinary tract anesthetics or anti-inflammatories.

Dude...that is a URINARY TRACT INFECTION. not a urine retract infection....that sounds like it would hurt. Anyways, drink cranberry juice or go to the drug store and get "uristat", which will get rid of all the symptoms. Be sure that you get an antibiotic from your doc though when the results come back because the uristat dosent treat the infection, it just gets rid of the symptoms...and works like a charm! Also, what is taking your dr. so long for the results??? It takes like 2 seconds.

Drink Cranberry Juice and plenty of water, and lie down. To avoid future infections, Drink Plenty of Cranberry Juice, water, and go to the Restroom often.
