What do you mean by "didn't help right"? How old is your son? how high is his temp? How long has he had it? anything else going on-symptoms? Have you tried a luke warm bath? Not a cold one-will only raise his temp/body heat. The will be effective if he passes gas- unless he pushes it out while passing gas or has the runs. Here are some instructions hope they help.
1.Run the suppository under cold water or put it in the refrigerator for a few minutes before using it.
2.Remove any wrapping from the suppository and moisten the suppository with cold water. lie down with one leg straight and the other bent, in a comfortable position that allows access to the rectal area.
3.Use your finger, or the applicator if one is provided, to deposit the suppository as far as it will comfortably go into the rectum. Insert the narrow end first.
4.Close his legs and have him lie still for a few minutes. If the applicator will be reused, take it apart and wash it with warm water and mild soap, then dry it completely.
5.Avoid having a bowel movement for at least 1 hour after inserting the suppository.
6.Stop use and ask a doctor if fever gets worse or lasts more than 3 days, pain gets worse or lasts more than 5 days, or redness or swelling is present or any new symptoms appear.

Yup, know the feeling...had to give my daughter suppositories quite often. Trick is, they need to be inserted quite deep in order to actually take effect. If you're squirmish on using a finger, Try using a digital thermometer to push it up a little further...but don't push it! Just far enough where it won't fall out or slip out on first expulsion as gas.
