Pain meds?!

Question: I recently torn my ACL and Meniscus in my left knee. My dr gave me percocet 5mg and it says "take 1 or 2 ever 4-6 hours". Well, I have been doing that, but it is not helping at all. I don't want to ask for something stronger because I'm afraid that he will think I am just trying to get high or something. What do you suggest saying to him that will make him feel that it is actually the pain making me ask and not drug seeking as i've heard it called? Is there a suggestion for the type of medication I should ask for?

After my knee surgery, I had a rough time with pain in the recovery room. The doc originally had prescribed Percocet, but when he saw that pain was a problem, prescribed oral Demerol.

I only needed it for a few days; if you tell the doc that the med med working to relieve your pain and are reasonable, NOT DEMANDING, he's likely to presribe something stronger. No doc wants to see you suffer. (they KNOW torn muscles cause tremendous pain).

So, best thing to do, its be honest with the doc and ask him for help.

I worried about that when asking for a vicodin refill after breaking my leg. They didn't act like it was a big deal at all and refilled it, no problem. You might ask about taking Aleve or another anti-inflammatory with your percocet. That helped me alot.

Tell him the truth. Say the pills are not easing the pain. It is up to him then. If normal pain killers are not working he needs to know this to help him evaulate what might be wrong - maybe medication is not the answer and an operation or some other method of treatment might work better. He won't know if you don't tell him.

Different pain meds work on different things - just like aspirin works great on headaches, but not a leg pain. I would tell the doc that percocet is not working the way you expected, and can he/she recommend another pain reliever that will give a different result. Maybe he would recommend vicodin or codeine. YOU HAVE TO ASK!!!

doctors know that sometimes medicines react differently on different people. ease your mind and your pain. go ahead and ask.

Just be honest and explain that you are not getting enough relief for the pain.

Coming up with special explanation or suggesting drugs is more likely to sound phony.

Doctors are aware that people can have different results with pain medications.

I am an RN. Doctors change pain medication orders all the time.
