My boyfriend refuses to go to the doctor?!

Question: He snores heavily but says it runs in his family. But then, every now and then through out the night, there'll be a period of not breathing (lasting anywhere from five to ten seconds) followed by a deep breath. Also, throughout the night, he'll wake up slightly for a few seconds and fall back to sleep. He is a bit overweight and has agreed to start going to the gym regularly. And has started sleeping on his side but he'll still stop breathing even then.

The problem is that he hates the doctor's and refuses to go in. I hate the doctor's too but I kept telling him that if I might actually HAVE something, I'd go in and he should too. But he flat-out refuses to go, no matter my pleading.

What do I do?

yeah your boyfriend defiantly has what is called sleep apnea what you could do maybe to motivate hi is research it online and get as much information on it as you can, that way maybe it will scare him a little. "Apnea" is Greek for "without breath." so it is a somewhat of serious sleep disorder. this link should help you with more info on it. talk to him about it and print the article sometimes people dont pay too much attention until they know the consequences

SLEEP APNEA!!!!!!!!

Look it up and show the information to him, then maybe he will go. Because he can stop breathing and DIE.

Classic sleep apnea symptoms. To help, he will need to see a doctor. He can be fitted with devices to help the snoring. Elevate the head when he sleeps so his throat doesn't relax too much, which can trigger snoring. That, or hold a pillow over his face...Good luck.

Sleep apnea.

Most likely he suffers from sleep apnea.

Options:

1) Breathe-right strips help a great deal.
2) No alcohol before bed.
3) You sleep in separate bedrooms.

There are sprays that you can purchase, or adjusting his pillows may help. I've been with a "snorer" longer than I care to share, and it sometimes is just something that you have to deal with.

Alcohol + excess weight = a recipe for snoring!

Good luck!

I have no idea how good these are but it may be worth a try.

It sounds like he has sleep apnea and should go to a sleep clinic so they can monitor his sleep and come up with the best solution for him.
I have no idea if the snore strips do any good for sleep apnea

Definitely Sleep Apnea! He need to have a sleep study and he will probably need a C-Pap machine to help him sleep at night. It will provide oxygen for him.

My husband has the same problem for the last 25 years that I know of and he still has not died. Though I have tried to smother him with the pillow on numerous occasions! Just resign yourself to the fact and get separate bedrooms or a very good set of earplugs, which is what I do. You can get them in the Builders providers/ health & safety shop in bulk fairly cheaply. The ones with the string in between are the best. Hang them over you neck and if they fall out of your ears during the night you can find them easily in the dark.

Sew some golf balls or walnuts into the back of his pj's. He cant sleep on his back then so ta da no snoring!

Its called sleep apnea. This is where the patient stops breathing for an extensive amount of time. This heavy snoring followed by apnea is most likely the caused by him swallowing his tongue. This type of apnea can be prevented by the patient warering a sort of mouth brace.

People that are overweight suffer from this much more frequently as the adipose (fat) in their neck blocks the air passage. It should be a priority that he looses weight and goes and speaks to his GP. When people stop breathing their oxygen levels deplete which causes neurones (brain cells) to die.

This is sleep apnoea and your boyfriend should really go see his GP as it can cause problems. It has been linked to high blood pressure and heart attacks. It causes tiredness and lack of concentration as well as other symptoms. I don't know if your boyfriend drives but there are actually regulations from the DVLA about driving if you have sleep apnoea.
If he won't go to the GP there is little you can do...he cannot be forced but maybe if you give him a shock, maybe by telling him the risk to his long term health, he may change his mind. Let him look at these links...they may help.
