Have I broken my knee cap? (numbness in one area and strange motion)?!

Question: Five days ago, I whacked my knee on a brick wall pretty hard. It immediately swelled up and became numb. Here I am almost a week later, and the upper right side of my kneecap is still numb, and when I apply pressure on the edge of the numb area, and can feel a corresponding movement on the other end. That is, I can feel one half of my kneecap move, but not the other. Also, when the knee cap does move, I can feel it "creak". Have I broke my kneecap and/or nerve?

Go to the doctor on Monday and get it X-rayed. The doc will tell you what's wrong. We can't tell you without seeing it.

I don't know, but i'd probably get it checked out by a doctor. Because i hurt both my knees in somewhat the same way, and i didn't do anything about it, and now i can't play any sports

The only way you will know is if they do an xray. I fell onto a cement floor pretty hard smack onto my right kneecap and I swear it felt like I broke up, but it ended up being internally bruised. I had to walk around with a leg and knee brace and crutches for over 2 months until it finally healed up completely. I say it is best to have xrays done if you can just to make sure. It would be the difference between a cast or soft cast or just a brace. Regardless that knee needs to be immobilized long enough for it to heal. Take some Tylenol or Motrin to ease up on the pain. Not much else you can do other than ice it up and do heat for achy muscle around it. Mostly ice though because it takes the swelling down. Good luck. I have injured myself and have been in the emergency room so many times so I know how these things work. Also being in Martial Arts and breaking bones, getting concussions, and just basically pulling muscles and such makes you aware of what works and what doesn't. Ice becomes you best friend in all cases.

You do not mention after care... Since there is numbness, you should not wait any longer and see a doctor, (Orthopedics) and get an ex ray for starters.

It will show if there is broken bone. An MRI may have to be performed to see what other damage has been done. A really good Ortho doc should be able to tell without it but will verify with MRI and ex rays...

Ice it and stay off it. The Knee are crucial and take a lot of abuse...

I cant really say what had happend on your knee because its hard to say when you dont see it. After a week, is it still swollen and hyperemic (hot to touch) and are you in deep pain? if yes, I think you should have it X-rayed because these are signs that there is a fracture.
