I quit cold turkey, five years ago, after visiting www.whyquit.com and reading every page on the site. I don't know why it worked, but I never touched or wanted to touch another cigarette again. If I ever feel the temptation, I will definitely revisit the site and scare the bejesus out of myself again! There's a lot to be said for the good, old fashioned fear factor.

The advice your received above is valid, too. If you're seriously about quitting, set a date, clean your car, your clothing, your house, of all cigarettes, paraphenalia, smoke odors, and smoke triggers.

Most importantly, one slip doesn't mean you've blown the effort. Keep Trying!

get rid of ALL the accoutrement: the ashtrays, lighters, matches, ALL the cigarettes. You can't pick one up if it is not there. Also, make sure to wash all your clothes and anything that might smell like smoke. Stay away from smokers and places where smokers are.

The first couple of days are the hardest. You can do it. You will be so happy. Focus on the reasons why you want to do this and how it will change your life. You will be liberated!

If it is too hard to do this cold turkey, see your doctor for other options. There are many successful therapies.

First you cut down ur daily cigarettes, ie/ 25 to 20, then to 10 etc. Also as you cut down go from the strength of the cigareete to a weaker one. Then you will gradually give up. Then move onto patches or gum. But its best to wean yourself of smoking then to stop suddenly, cases show yor 4 times more likely to stay a non-smoker.

the first time it was cold turkey, with the aid of pumpkin seeds for a while, lasted 3 years. last time i used wellbutrin (zyban) for about a month (right before chantix came out), it's been almost 2 years now and i'm not ever going back.

the wellbutrin was strange. while on that drug, i lost interest in everything. i was glad to get off of it in a hurry.

I got pneumonia. I would never have gotten it if I didn't smoke. Every year I would get the flu with really bad bronchitis. So one year I got pneumonia and was too sick to smoke. When I got better and wanted to smoke even though the nicotine was out of my body and there was no more physical addiction, so I chewed the gum for quiting. I could have avoided the bronchitis and pneumonia if I just didn't smoke. While you smoke you will always have a weakness in your lungs. Good luck on quiting-don't wait to get pneumonia to stop smoking.

I went wilderness camping for a week and did not bring any smokes.

It was rough. But I survived.

Get to your doc and get a prescription for Chantix. It will help alot. I've had mroe than 20 friends quit using it and they were all longggg time smokers.

When i quit,,,, well i have to really want it or i can't do it. the night before i deside to quit, I smoke 2 to 3 times more , it starts to make me ill and helps to push me toward never having another one. it hard but worth it.
