How long after a tramatic accident does it take to see if there is swelling on t!

Question: My cousin was in a horrible snowmobiling accident last night and is on a ventilator. They said he is doing good but they are waiting to see if there is swelling on his brain.. How long does it take to see if this has happened and how long is the critical period? When can we be sure he is out of harms way?
Thank You in Advance.

They know right away What they are waiting for it to see how quickly it goes down which will be a better indication of the extent of the head trauma and if there will be any preeminent damage.

Sometimes within a few hours, almost always within 24.

I wish him the best.

Had a son who who went through this.
Less than 4 hours.......................Been a long time now.

God speed for your cousin's recovery.

The first 24 hours are the most critical. After 48 hours have passed, they are usually out of danger.
My daughter was ejected from a car. She had severe skull fractures & a badly broken neck. After 2 days the neurologist told us she was past the critical stage.
