If air bubbles get in youre iv tube and go in youre arm can or will it kill you?!

Question: Whoa, hold up! It is possible but it would take like a cup of bubbles. Just thump the IV tubing and the bubbles will go up toward the top instead of in you.

Yes it can kill you.....

If air gets in your blood stream, yeah!

NO! That is a misconception. The tiny pin head size bubbles, while they are not desirable in a IV infusion will not hurt you. If you see a lot of them, it would be wise to alert the nurse. We have Hollywood to thank for this myth.

IF a lot of air would get into your bloodstream it would become trapped in the atria of the heart and would not be good.

Thanks to Truth for supporting my stance here.

it takes at least 6 cc's of air to kill someone. that is alot of air. iv's are designed not to have air in them, what your seeing is just the mixing or dropping of the saline or medicine, not actually air bubbles.

No it won't.

No. IV's are in the vein and small amounts of air bubbles will not harm you. The blood in the veins are on their way back to the heart to be pumped to the lungs to get oxygenated. Small amounts of air will be absorbed into the blood and will not harm you.
