Ibs or something else?!

Question: I've been having abdominal pain/discomfort on my right side for about three months now. It is not cramping... it actually feels more like a muscle problem except it 'bubbles.' Just in the last week or so it's extended to my left side at certain times. At my last appt, my doctor said she thinks it's IBS. I do have some bowel problems but the pain is the thing that's been bothering me. The pain is constant except for when I'm lying down and it doesn't hurt first thing in the morning, it hurts usually after I've been moving around a little bit. What I eat seems to play no part in it. Because I don't need to eat anything and it still hurts. At the beginning of my problem I went to the ER and they took out my appendix (which turned out to be not the problem.) I do have a muscle strain under my right ribs but that causes different pain all together. Does this sound like IBS? If not, what could it be? I'm 26/f...

You have every reason to be concerned. You need to ask your doctor to refer you to a gastroenterologist. This is a doctor that specializes in disorders of the digestive system, liver, gallbladder, etc. Someone mentioned Crohn's disease. You're not too young to have this disorder. I've suffered from it since I was 25. A colonoscopy can confirm the diagnosis.

In any case, you need to have the colonoscopy, or possibly some other tests, to determine what is causing your chronic stomach pains. That is just not normal. You may also be suffering from a hernia where your appendix was removed, if you didn't heal properly.

Sounds like IBS, however, I would have a colonoscopy done just to take a look around. It can be stress related. Never have I heard a doctor tell you that you are to young for cancer, It has to start somewhere. It doesn't sound like cancer (so don't let me freak you out), but I can't believe that came out of a doctors mouth. Have you been tested for Celiac disease? (Wheat intollerance) or Milk? Celiac can be very painful and hard to diagnose, good luck.

Please keep going to your GP, do not let them just diagnose IBS. I was diagnosed with IBS without any tests and had something completely different, and life threatening.Try the NHS helpline.

Hi there,

I have IBS and although it is different for different people i dont think this is what you have. IBS tends to cause pain on the left abdominal side (where the colon is found) and food plays an anmormous part in IBS.

Another possibility could be Crohns disease which is a chronic inflammatory disease, primarily involving the small and large intestine, but which can affect other parts of the digestive system as well. The most common symptoms of Crohn
