Sprained ankle prevention?!


Question: I sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago and it looks like I'm going to be back to running track next week. I took 2 weeks of physical therapy. What is the best way to prevent this injury from reoccuring in the future? How long if ever will the liaments be completly strengthened?

You really cannot strengthen ligaments because they are a non-contractile tissue. Your best defense is to continue exercises that increase "proprioception"...or balance in other words. This strengthens and trains muscles that react to abnormal forces to react in an appropriate manner in order to avoid end range stresses on the ligaments.

...yoga, Tai Chi...etc.

Braces big time, and get a hightop shoe or somthing 4 more support

Unless it was a really really mild sprain you shouldnt be running on it. Thats the best prevention - let it heal properly.
