Hurt thumb... should I just cut it off? :)?!

Question: Ok, seriously though I play flag football and baseball. A few weeks back I went to grab someones flag but they turned and ran towards me bending my thumb back and hurting it kind of near the base of the thumb by the wrist.

Just the other night I was playing baseball and I turned my glove awkwardly to catch a ball I dove for and, of course, my thumb caught the ground and bent back a bit again.

My question is, what did I do to it? I realize it's hard to tell exactly, but could it be a muscle pull/strain? A stretched ligament? More importantly, how can I get the soreness to go away and have it heal faster? Not playing is not an option. I'm looking for something along the lines of maybe taping it, heat, ice, wrapping it, soaking it, whatever will speed up the recover. It seems to be a recurring injury at this point because it's not getting back to 100%

You need to use the RICE method... R= rest I= ice C= compression and E= elevation. I just did the same thing to both of my thumbs only in gymnastics. I iced around 3 times a day rested and took pain killers and I was back in the gym 6 days later. I even got to compete in my meet the next day! I went to the doctors and had x-rays taken but they weren't broken. They told me what I just to you to do. You really can't buddy tape it because your thumb is in a weird place for taping. But you don't really want to tape it anyway, the best thing is to have a little movement in it. You don't want it to get stiff and have to go to physical therapy. I would say take Ibuprofen (Motrin) for pain and swelling. I know it stinks to rest but that is the best thing for it. I was killing me to sit at home and miss practice. I wanted to go really bad, but if I would have went sooner then I did it would probably hurt worse. If it still hurts really bad in a week then you should go get x-rays. Oh yea and when I did go back to the gym after 6 days it didn't hurt to practice, but it did hurt to pick up things and do normal activities, which was kind of weird, but just letting you know. I hope this helps and I hope your thumb feels better. Oh and don't cut it off.

Have you had it checked by a doctor?

You could very well have chipped the bone - that happened to me playing basketball many years ago. See a dr - you'll probably be wearing a splint for a few weeks.

You pulled your ligament in your thumb. If you go to an orthopedic sugeon, they will cast your hand/arm/thumb for 4 weeks but it will still be weak afterwards. Seriously, keeping it immobile is the only way to heal it.
I did the exact same thing to my thumb last summer. They cast it and after the swelling went down, I was able to take my cast on and off...so I did! What a mistake. I have sooo much trouble with it now. I can barely write. Go and get it cast and leave it in there!!1

Cut it off makes it better in a second!

R.I.C.E. Rest, ice, compress. elevate. You will only keep injuring it if you continue to use it which could result in more extensive damage. It's up to you. If after letting your thumb get some rest and the pain is worse or isn't getting any better you should see a doctor.

Just spray freeze it and tape it. A special brace is available in drug stores. Get that.

I mean get that, read the instructions and wrap it as per the instructions.......... lol.

Get on with the games. Q for you. Where do you play baseball in dead of winter? I got to see this one.

It seems like anything we hurt keeps getting hurt. It's like when you have a sunburn on your back and people slap your back. Try icing it then wrapping it in tape and making a homemade splint to hold it up and help it heal. At least that way it's a little safer from being bent back. I hope this helps. :o)

No, then you will suffer from phantom limb pain.

If you do then you will know exactly what the problem is and how to fix it.
