Knees popping and cracking cause?!

Question: For the last month or 2 I have been experiencing popping and cracking noises in both knees they are painful sometimes esp. when I try to do squats and lunges, which I have temp. stopped doing because of my knees.Iam not overweight I run 4 to 5 miles a day could that have anything to do with it? I have been running for over 2 years 5 to 6 days a week.Sometimes they feel really tight to like they might be swollen.Any advice Iam seeing my dr. and am going to bring this up at my next appt. but just was wondering if anyone had any ideas on here.

I get that. I've been told I have fluid in my kneecaps and that's what causes it. My knees 'creak',crunch when i squat too and it hurts below my knee inside if I run alot. I'm not overweight either. Some people get an injection to take out the excess fluid which I think relieves pressure. I havn't had this done, it doesn't really bother me. I'm not sure if my knees crunch because of extra fluid or because I've chipped the knee bone and there's cartilage in the fluid. I think fluid in your kneecap is likely. I think the amount you run might have something to do with it, especially if you don't get that energy back with enough food.

Have a look at this site I know its for kids but it explains things quite well, says at the bottom about exercise.

It's possible this is early arthritis. The cushioning cartilages have been worn down to the point where the bony articular sufaces are actually grinding. This should show up on xray. If it is cartilage damage in general from aging and repetitive pounding of your workout this may not show up on the xray.
