Sprained wrist - do you keep the strapping on at night?!

Question: my mum has spent a good few hours in A&E today after a fall last week and still suffering pain in her hand and ankle.

she is ok, but has sprained her wrist.

they've given her a wrist strap, quite a stiff rigid thing that does up with velcro straps, to stop too much movement of the joint i guess.

she wants to know: should take it off when she goes to bed?
and how long should she keep it on for? days, weeks, months?!!

she did ask, but being a bit deaf didn't hear the answer clearly.

I had the same problem and got given one of those things. I had to keep mine on all the time except for bathing and washing up etc. It should be kept on overnight as well, as more injury can be done whilst sleeping, eg you can twist it round without knowing it!

Hope this helps.

keep it on 24/7

Generally you leave them on all the time for a while. As for how long, that would depend on how bad the sprain is. The best thing to do would be to have someone who will be able to hear and understand call the doctor's office back on the phone and ask for clarification. The nurse will be able to explain the doctor's instructions again on the phone. You might also tell them of the deafness problem so they can be sure to explain the directions more clearly or in writing next time.

yeah, if you want to heal as fast as it could, you should keep it on at all times.

not overnight, it can stop your circulation

she needs to keep it on for safety reasons
