Pins and needles generally reflects a nerve dysfunction. if the nerve is badly impaired you may have trouble with muscular movement. The nerve in your hand originates in your brain, travels down the spinal cord, goes out to your shoulder, curves down around your and splits in to three nerves that go to your hand. You can have nerve damage from an injury (cut), illness(diabetes), poison(alcohol) and all may feel like numbness and tingling or pins and needles. Your nerve can also be affected if you put prolonged pressure on it. For example if you walk on crutches your hand may be numb because of pressure on the nerve in the armpit. The common pins and needles you get is because of some type of pressure one the nerve, i.e. you drape your arm over the sofa while sitting thus putting pressure on the nerve at the elbow. If you lay funny on your arm at night this may also do it. This type of problem generally goes away quickly if you don't continue the pressure.

The uncomfortable sensation occurs when the blood supply to a part of the body is cut off for a short time.
The blood flowing back into the affected area causes the brain to send 'messages' to the nerves in the part of the body where the blood flow was affected, producing that familiar feeling we call 'pins and needles'

the nervous system receptors have lost blood flow, not completely but enough to desensitive them. When blood flow is regained they come back to life and give off a few too many neurotransmitters which give us the funny feelings.

Restricted blood supply for many possible reasons.

If you loose basic sensations then you will find it difficult to relate to the real world!
