What happens when you sleep with contact lenses?!

Question: I've found out what happens. I've been wearing contacts that aren't made to be on overnight for some time, and most of the time, I don't take them off. Lately, my eyes have been getting really red, and last night, when I woke up, I had some white liquid all over my eyes, like a pink eye but both. Do you know why this happens?
I would try to take them off every night, but I know I'll forget. Does sleeping with contact lenses cause major damage to my eyes? I just want to know because when I get home, I go directly to sleep sometimes, and I leave them on 50% of the time.
Thanks ;)

I was real hard headed when it came to taking out my contactsi would get a six month supplyof 2wk dispos. ones and when i would get down to my last pair like 2 yrs later i would keep them in until i lost them instead of going and payin the dr visit exam and for more so lemme put it this way i wore 1 pair of disp 2 wk lenses round the clock for about 6 mo (no joke) i only took em out maybe twice for a couple minutes well i lost them and had to go to dr he looked at them i told him what i had done but he already knew he thought i still had an old pair in my eyes he nummed em and dug around and concluded i had caused a dent in my eye most likely permanent and i had something were the blood vessels were visable in my eye like a disease they said u aint supposed to be able to see the blood vessels in your eye but u can in mine like a permanent buzz that was from no oxygen to my eyes he said if i kept doing it i would go blind he gave me the hydraclear and i didnt do it again now i lost them from taking them out all the time so i wear my glasses till i can go back to dr

It depends whether you have soft or hard lenses, and of what type. If you sleep with hard lenses there is a risk of oxygen deprivation which leads to inflammation of the eye, damaging your eye which can lead to vision loss or even blindness and bacteria growing in the warm liquid between the eye and lens, which also can lead to inflammation. When you sleep with soft lenses there is also the oxygen problem, but also that proteins build up in your lens, and feed bacteria. This could lead to really bad inflammations, which in turn can evolve to a bad enough state in which you might lose your sight. I presume you do not want that to happen. I don't know how things work where you're from (I'm Dutch, explains the bad spelling) but here you can also have 1-day lenses, which you can wear a full 24 hours before you replace them with a new set. However, this costs a bit more than weeklenses, monthlenses, 2-monthlenses or yearlenses. In all the other kinds of lenses you have to clean them very regularly. (I'm sorry if I sound like your grandmother, I'm only 18, but I know how bad lenses can damage your eyes..) The white liquid was a buildup of protein, which is not harmful in itself, but you must keep your lenses clean. Take good care of your eyes! You'll have to use them for the rest of your life! I hope I have given you something you can work with, good luck....

If you cannot train yourself to take it out, do not wear them. The lenses restrict oxygen to your eyes and is a good place for eyes infection. Use glasses. You are going to use your eyes for the next 40 years (I guess). Unless you don't mind getting blind in next 15 years.
