Has violent coughing ever caused neck pain or 'slipped discs'?!

Question: I've been suffering from a nasty case of Bronchitus which causes some violent coughing and now my back, abs, and especially my neck is very sore. So sore, I'm afraid I may have 'slipped a disc' or injured myself. How should I deal with the pain effectively? (other than Advil)

First go to your doctor and get medicine to suppress/control the coughing.

Next, although rare one can experience a "slipped disc", just as the simple thing of a physically health man can do so simply bending over and picking up a pale of water. It is common that motorcycle riders have thrown their back out kick starting their bike.

The soreness you describe is common just like getting sore muscles from extreme hard/prolonged laughing. I have experienced sore neck muscles from a prolonged continued sneezing fit. Had to go to the ER for treatment of the sneezing and then time/rest for the sore neck.

It is the same as getting sore from working out. Each time you cough your muscles in neck, chest, back strongly/violently contract.

One thing that I find helps is keep a pillow near you. As you cough, hold/press the pillow tight against your abdomen. It helps support the muscles in neck and back.

This is commonly used in the hospitals on patients after surgery, to help prevent rupturing(busting) open the stitches.

My sister broke a rib coughing. I have a damaged back and my disc can slip out of place by coughing as well.
maybe use a rubbing ointment on the areas that hurt for extra relief from the pain. if when the bronchitis clears up the pain isnt gone, get it checked out in case you have slipped something.

a woman in the paper died the other day from coughing....not sure exactly how thou.. wait til the coughing has gone away - coughing puts a lot of strain on your rib cage and back and it might pass once the coughing has stopped if it doesnt a few days after see a dr.
take ibuprofen - it helps with inflamation as well as pain, also a hot water bottle might help or a lavender wheat bag warmed if you can get one.

Violent coughing is bound to put strain on your muscles - especially the abs! Ouch!

(My sister's friend once coughed REALLY hard - and was (permanently) paralysed from the waist down! Double ouch or WHAT?!?!)

Your pain is a symptom - not the cause - the only thing that will help your pain is to treat the cause - your cough.

Good luck - and good health to you.
