Trauma from robbery?!


Question: my house was robbed almost 3 weeks ago, but i still have can't move on like experience sleeping disturbance at night, i'm extremely tired with it. suppose you have to experience trauma like this, what will you do to ease it? thanks!

This is post-traumatic stress syndrome... where a traumatizing event is not over for you and keeping you prisoner in your own fear. You need to logically, not emotionally deal with this event. Analyze it and learn from it, and prepare yourself to keep it from happening again. Taking steps in doing this can help and it makes you feel more secure and powerful in knowing that you are being constructive in finding ways to prevent it again. You also need to have an outlet for you feelings. Tell someone everything you feel. Maybe a friend, family, or counselor that will not be judgemental... someone that will only listen and offer support (not criticism). You feel violated, betrayed by another person, scared of the unknown, and fearful that the one place that made you feel secure is not anymore. You don't feel safe, therefore you can't function. You need to feel as though you can reclaim this house as YOUR home again (not theirs)... it's your haven, your fortress, a part of who you are. Yes, it is a part of you. After all, the average person spends 1/3 of their life asleep, and where do they do that? ... in their home. To many a home is an extension of themselves; they spend months or even years caring for, maintaining, decorating it with love - getting it just right, and living within & with it. Put strong locks on the windows & sliding glass doors (about $5 for a pack of 2 at a hardware store), double locks/deadbolts on the front & back doors, a chain lock inside the doors. You can get an alarm system too if you'd like (they are pretty cheap now--- my mom has one with Brinks and she pays just $200 year even with all her accidental set-offs & they gave her the system & extra control pads free too), or you can do what I did and get a dog. It doesn't matter what size 'cause if someone they don't know is trying to come in it'll go nuts barking at them & alert neighbors. Mine is big enough to eat someone (haha) though! You could even get a roommate to feel more secure (most people prefer not to live alone 'cause it can get lonely, plus it gives you a friend too). Another really great thing to do is to contact all you r neighbors and let them know what has happened. Form a neighborhood watch. "Cause chances are that theives pick a house in an area, then come back to that area a few weeks or months later when they think interest in what happened has died down. Get flyers out to every lamp-post or tree that tells you got robbed & that people need to be aware. Buy stickers that say "Insured by Smith & Wesson Guns", "Proud NRA Member", "Beware of Dogs", or "Alarmed by..... Alarm Co." & put them on your windows at eye level or near door openings to deter them. If they think you have a gun, dog, or alarm system they won't come in! You can get these at eBay and orlder them to be sent to your home. They typically cost about $2-4 each but Really work! You can also get stick-on/screw-on alarms that go off when a window or door opens that require no alarm company or wiring. You can get them are hardware stores for about 4 for $30. They have to be manually turned on & off by switching a button (which is sometimes annoying) but they screach really loud and work. They immitate the expensive alarm systems & are a good system themself in driving them off. These are ideal for apartments ir wherever you want a deterent without a commitment.
Anyways, the point is; talk about it (your still hurting & greiving) & take steps to empower yourself in knowing that your home is yours again. Reclaim it. Do these things and you will be able to move forward.
