Neck injury. Help?!

Question: Today, I was weight lifting and I was doing a box squat/parallel squat where you do these up/down things on a small box. Hard to explain. Anyways, my coach/teacher was asking me if my neck hurt, and I said yeah a little bit, but I don't think he heard me and then when I was done afterwards it hurt badly, and is now swollen. Very painful. Is there anything I can do to get rid of the pain and swelling? Or any suggestions at all?

It sounds like soft tissue injury, but all neck injuries should be fully assessed by a doctor because of the risk of damaging important nerves (like those in and around your spinal cord!).

Until you get it checked out, avoid moving it too much (up and down, and side to side), put ice (or a bag of frozen peas etc) into a towel and place this around the back of your neck to minimise swelling and inflammation. If you have pain relief containing Ibuprofen (an over the counter pain reliever with good anti inflammatory properties) then take this as recommended on the box.

See a doctor or go to an ER as soon as you can to get it looked at.

Good luck!
