Is true or a myth that if you bump your head hard, leaving a bump, you shouldnt !

Question: Because you might not wake up?

Answers: Because you might not wake up?

This is something that you see in movies alot. If someone hits their head very heard, they can develop a concussion. This basically means that they hit their head hard enough to cause some temporary damage to the brain or the tissue that surrounds it. A person can lose consciousness after a concussion.

Whether or not you go to sleep or lose consciousness has nothing to do with whether you will wake up or not. The fact of whether you will 'wake up' or not has only to do with how serious the injury is.

If you fall and bump your head or something like that, there is absolutely NO danger in going to sleep. If you or someone you know hits their head and then looses consciousness, they should seek medical attention.

Yeah, true. You don't want to fall asleep with any chance you're suffering from a concussion.

That is an old wives tale, take a Tylenol and a nap and you will feel a lot better

if you have concusion then you shouldnt go to sleep that is half true. basically if you have passed out from the bump or have a headache or a big lump you should get checked out by a a hospital. Dont go to sleep unless someone is supervising you - last summer we had to wake someone up ever hour to check they were ok after a blow to the head just before bedtime! you can rest if someone checks on you hourly and wakes you up - asks you questions etc but if you have a bump go to the hospital even if you feel ok because it could cause problems later on if its not checked out
the best cure is rest but you should be checked on - you should be easy to wake and know answers.
the reson they used to say dont sleep is because if a condition worsens no one can tell but it is a littel out dated so sleep but get checked on regularly. If you are alone, dont sleep or call someone but if you have a visable bump id go to hospital

I have heard this one more than once. I don't think it applies if you get a bump. If you don't get a bump, then that's a sign of a concussion, then you shouldn't go to sleep. The bump is opposite and doesn't move outwards so you can actually feel it, but I think it moves inward towards the brain. Something along that line...If you bump your head really hard and no bump appears, then you should go to the ER. If you have other symptoms as well, like dizzy or bad headache...go to the ER. My cousin got in a fight once and fell and hit his head on the concrete and a bump never came up, but later had to to ER and found out his brain was actually bleeding, needless to say he had a bad day.

I hit my head and was slightly incoherent and in the ambulance on the way to the hospital the paramedics would not let me fall asleep. I was feeling really sleepy.

It's true, they say this because if you fall a sleep after bumping your haed you might have a fracture or something and you might not wake up after. In other words you might die.

The main thing to remember after a head injury is to not stay alone, not to take anything stronger than Tylenol (aspirin or ibuprofen for the headache), do not drink alcohol and do not drive or operate heavy machinery for at least 24 HRS.

The person staying with you unfortunately is the one not getting any sleep. His/her assignment is to wake you every two hours and ensure you are oriented to person, place, time and event. "Hey buddy what's your name? Can you tell me what month it is? Where are we right now? Why am I asking you these dumb questions, what happened to you today?" Any inappropriate ans er to these questions should result in an immediate trip to the local ER.

Your buddy should also be watching you for nausea and vomiting, particularly vomiting that is projectile (can hit a Wall from 5 feet away), weakness or paralysis especially if it is one sided, headache that can not be relived with Tylenol (ibuprofen, aspirin), blurred vision or other visual disturbances and seizure. All of these are signs of significant head trauma, and you should be assessed.

Finally you do not have to lose consciousness to suffer from severe head trauma, the only and safest way to find out for sure is to see your doctor. Even if everything checks out right he will recommend the routine written above for at least 24-48 hours.

I hope this helps

lol ya get it checked out
