Should I worry about my 5 y/o's nose bleeding all the time?!

Question: My son's nose has been bleeding a lot lately. I know sometimes it's from picking it. But when he was about 4 he was running and fell off the curb of the side walk and slammed his face into the road. That was his first nose bleed. Since then he gets about 10 a year. But just this past weekend he had 4 and it's bleeding again tonight. I also noticed it is starting to get clots. Sometimes he can fill up two paper towels. Should I take him to the doctors??? Someone said if something happens to a vessel in there they can bleed to death.

If your son is picking his nose, this will just compound the problem.
The clots that are occuring indicate that the blood vessel in his nose is sealing itself, so to speak, and these vessels heal very quickly. Things like blowing your nose, sneezing, and picking all loosen the clots that are forming, and so the nose tends to bleed again.
If you are concerned, then take him back to your doctor, as it is only possible to assess the internal structures of the nose (like the septum) by examination. I'm wondering if his nose was checked after the fall he had when he was younger? If not, then he should probably get his nose examined in case he broke it and has a deviated septum, which in itself is not dangerous, but it can lead to difficulties with breathing through his nose, or snoring problems.
If the nose bleeds continue, or are becomming traumatic for your son, then his nose can be cauterised, which should stop the problem. This isn't as horrible as it sounds, and just involves a small disposable probe being placed up his nose for a moment. It doesn't hurt.
Meanwhile manage any nose bleeds by sitting your son down and tilting his head forward, so that any blood would drip into his lap. Pinch the nostrels just below the bridge of the nose and apply firm pressure. You can also place an ice pack (or frozen peas etc) on the back of his neck, and a wrapped ice block on the bridge of the nose (on the side of the bleed). This should work fairly quickly, but the general rule is get people seen by a doctor if the bleeding does not stop, or if they show signs of not coping with the bleed.
Hope this helps!

That does not sound good! I would take him to the doctors tommorow and get him checked out!

i wouldnt worry too much, my son is now 18, and he has suffered with nose bleeds from a very early age, sometimes that bad he could fill up a hand towel!! when he was younger he had them alot, and i was worried, i took him to the doctors coz they used to really drain him, was also upsetting to, and the doctor just said that he had a weakness in one of his blood vessels, he couldve had it cortorised , but doc said he wasnt to concerned so we didnt, they eased off alot, but he still gets them usually when hes got a cold. dont worry about the clotting, thats a natural process, and please dont listen to the person who said he could bleed to death from it!! if its clotting then thats good. try holding a small pkt of frozen peas on the nose to help stop them quicker. hope this has helped !

maybe, go see a doctor it may be season or allergy related and I'm not sure

Yes take him to the doctor ASAP.

i had popped a blood vessel in my nose and i would get at least 4 nose bleeds a day i went to the ENT ear nose throat and they said a blood vessel has popped and they courterised it and i only had 2 nosebleedssince! take him to an ent

Don't worry about it, it's probably just dry, because of the season, or like you said from picking your nose. Just keep it pinched with his head bent down when it happens.
