I'm catching something and I have to sing on Saturday. What should I do?!

Question: My dad is about at the pinnacle of what he had which ended in him loosing his voice completely. Before that, his voice got deeper and before that he coughed allot. I can only assume that we have the same thing... Assuming that, what should I do? I have a UIL competition this Saturday and I have to sing. Currently I am at the stage of my throat being very uncomfortable but not painful and occasional coughing. If I remain like this I should be alright to be able to sing enough but if it gets much worse it will incapacitate my vocal cords for the competition. I've been resting my voice all day (symptoms started yesterday) as well as using cough drops but it has gotten worse over the course of the day. What can I do?

gargle with warm water and salt.

use throat lozagnes, they soothe the throat and make it less scratchy, cough drops only calm the chords after coughing.

drink warm stuff, hot tea, hot water with lemon

stay away from cold drinks with sugar, OJ, juices

and no milk.

Hope you feel better by Sat.

get some occillium at sprouts it's expensive but it boots you're immunity and also steam take a steamy shower..

just hit it with seriously every cold helping product you have in your medicine cabinet

DON'T sing!!! I too was a singer(still am), and the same thing happened to me a number of years ago with the same symptoms..I didn't listen to my doctor when he said give it a rest for a month. I carried on, one more time led to another one more time led to...... .
Three months later I had no voice(to speak of). I spent the next five years recouperating AND without being able to sing a note

I can still sing now but not as sweet as I once did.All this because I thought I could get away with just one more time.
I repeat!!! don't do it and in the long term you'll thank yourself.

It is better to rest yourself for a week or two than be forced to lose what you have, for a lifetime.

Asian professional singers take ginger drink all the time. Maybe, you can try it although I'm not sure if it will work for you. Boil slices of ginger (just a few slices) in water, in a small pot and drink while warm. You need not chew the ginger slices. Check with your doctor though, if this is okay for your medical condition. Good Luck on your competition.
