How does a hospital know who the next of kin is?!

Question: If a person was uncounsious and in bad shape, how does a hospital know who to call? I am a newley wed who does not get along with my husbands family. How can I make sure that I am the one called and not them? If they were called first then they prob. wouldnt even tell me. Thats how bad they are! How does the EMS or the ER know who to call?

well, i work in the ER and we usually get the cell phone and look for family members/spouse IF the person has a cell phone. if not, we find a license or identification of some sort and start searching our system and the phone book. i have even gotten to the point that i had to get a patients family member by his keys (the movie rental card was attached to it) and we had to call the movie place and get a name of somebody who was on the account........key is cell phone and info in wallet.......i have my husband programmed in my phone as "husband ..........and his name) i also have an address book in my purse with ICE (in case of emergency) info on it..........all ER's and EMS know what ICE stands for.........put your name on a paper in his wallet titled ICE

Your husband or you should have some kind of id next to your drivers license saying in case of an accident please call so and so. And if your taking any kind of medication you should have that next to your license also.
