Why do onions make your eyes watery & stingy?!

sulphuric acid inside the onions rises when the onion is cut. these get into your eyes and force tears.

I heard a bit on the radio the other day. They said the odor is for preservation of the onion. Same reason why peppers are so hot...so no one will eat them... Guess it doesn't work... but that is what they were saying.
