I need a MRI on my hip is it scary and what do they do ?!

Question: Imagine a large donut-shaped machine, that's what ilooks like. You will be lying on a stretcher with your hip area immobilized with a brace to keep your pelvis still. The stretcher will move your hip area into the "hole" of the "donut" & when the scan begins you will hear a lot of beeps & buzzes for about 30 minutes. You will need to be very still so they can get the best pictures. It isn't scary, just may make you feel a little claustrophobic. Just close your eyes & focus on breathing in through your nose & out through your mouth.

It's not scary. They place you on a bed that rolls into this big tube. Just relax and be still and listen to the beat that the machine makes. And you can't wear anything metal in there.

Don't worry about it, it is not painful. An MRI is simply a video type of x-ray. You will lay on a table and the table moves back into a large cylinder. The cylinder is loud as the machine does the x-ray and you do have to be patient and lie still.

If they have to do the test with contrast, that means that is is done with a dye that is injected into your arm and it is not painful usually. It feels like a shot.

Don't worry about it. You will be fine.

An MRI gets a good look at what it is scanning. I had one, it is very small and close to your face and if you have some kind of problem with that you need to call or tell your physician.

Do you know if it is a closed MRI machine or an open one?

I had one done on my head (severe headaches) and it was closed. You lie on your back completely still and completely in the machine. They put a helmut type thing over your head-not on it, over it. Then, they take the scans-it gets kinda noisy. BUT they talk to you through a microphone and make sure you are ok.

I had one done on my leg and it was a closed machine but I did not go all the way in. That one was a lot easier.

If you have to go all the way in the machine and you are claustrophobic, you can ask your doctor for a mild sedative to take before you go.

With a hip, you may not have to go all the way in and it is NOT bad at all. You just have to be totally still. It does not hurt.

Feel better!
