Pain medication?!

Question: I suffered a grade 3 seperated shoulder 1month and 3 days ago. Im in a tight spot, I have found through this that I have a very high tollerance for so far, any type of pain medications that they can give me. Even the night it happened I stayed the night in the emergency room, the nurses couldnt believe the amount of morphine they were giving me and it still would not do much for the pain. One even comented that I should be a zombie. Im not a big guy either, 5' 10" 150 lbs. Well the doctor gave me Percocete, it made me sick and didnt do much for the pain, so they gave me vicodin. It doesnt make me sick, but I have to take more than prescribed just to get a little relief. well every time I call for a refill they get more and more defensive. and this last time they said this is your last.
I still have alot of pain and it wont be long, no relief.
Dont get me wrong, I understand that there are people that would abuse these drugs, and doctors should beware. but what do I do?

The people that say never take pain meds longer than a month have never been in real pain or they would know how silly that is.

I've been taking hydrocodone and oxycodone for several years for a spine injury thanks to a drunk driver.

The person that knows what is best as far as pain meds go is your doctor. He will tell you if you what is best. Getting addicted to pain medications is just part of having chronic pain.

Abusing pain medications is a completely different thing. Taking more than is directed is a easy way to cause yourself problems.

I have been in a pain management program for years and have never ran out of medication or needed more because I only take what is on the bottle.

If you have a pain issue and you are having problems find a pain management clinic or try this method.

Start a daily journal, nothing fancy, a notebook works fine. Record when you hurt, where you hurt, how badly you hurt, and how the pain is impacting your life.
When you go to the doctor take it with you and show it to him/her.

It's hard to remember everything when you only have a few minutes with the doctor and you are nervous from being in there anyway.

I hope you feel better soon and I hope the self proclamed 'drug experts' on here never have to face a life of chronic pain. I dream of the day I won't have to take pain meds everyday. I've been dreaming of that day for almost 10 years.

Being addicted to pain medication is no different than a diabetic using insulin. If you don't use it you are screwed.

you should never take pain meds longer than a month cause after a month is an addiction and needs help. pain meds are very addictive usually and not for a separated shoulder i have had one, are pain meds prescribed for longer than a month and you need to go see your doc again and maybe get some physical therapy. please be careful.
there are somthings that you need to be on pain meds for for a long time. i just know what its like . please be careful and talk to your doc again

Actually, there are many, many people that have to take pain medicine daily--which would be more than the previous author's definition of pain management.

If the medication that you are talking is not helping, then maybe you need a differnt class of pain relief. There are many muscle relaxant medicines that help greatly with pain, such as Flexeril or Zanaflex.

you can try electric therapy to ease the pain if you are interested to try this therapy you can email me cecilio624@yahoo.com for further information.

It must be terribly frustrating to be so resistent of pain medication. Unfortunately, the body can only take so much medication before it is no longer safe to increase the dosage.

The causes of medication resistance would probably have to be determined by a doctor. The only thing you might want to try would be ice or heat therapy. Try using a heating pad on your injury, or an ice pack. They are proven methods of reducing pain, and they might help you. But if not, I would seek a doctor's opinion if you can.

But be careful with the heat and don't leave it on your injury so long that it burns you. And the same thing goes with the ice. Don't leave it on your injury for longer than a few minutes at a time, if that. You should know when to apply and remove the ice or heat by using your own judgement.

Hope that helps. Good luck managing your hurt shoulder.
