I need a doctor or pharmacist opinion. My tolerance to pain medication is too hi!

Question: I have been taking pain medications for about 2 years and my tolerance has gotten really high. So high that when I dont take them I get to feeling really sick. Now I would go to different doctors to get them and would never go to my main doctor unless I was sick with say a sinus infection or something of that sort. So he has no clue that I have been taking pain medication for so long or the amount I have been taking. I would say on average day I will take about anywhere from 30mg to 60mg of hydrocodone/apap or oxycodone/apap. What do you think my doctor will tell me to do. I'm hoping he will prescribe hydrocodone/apap or oxycodone/apap medication and slowly lower the dose each week or something like that. My dad is going with me to assure the doctor that he and my mom will be responsible for giving me the medication at certain times. I'm willing to do blood work or anything to prove to my doctor that I won't abuse and will do whatever he says. I refuse to quit cold turkey.

Well, just to let you know 30-60mg isn't really that much. You should be able to wean off that fairly easily. If you get sick Suboxone is always an option as you can withdraw without any sickness. Plus it kills the urge to take something that you don't need, but mentally you think you do.

I was prescribed Percocet for my back after a rollover accident w/o seatbelt. I've been on them for a long time now and take as much as 500mg of vicodin percocet or oxycontin any given day.

I quit cold turkey, but I know that's not for everyone.

If you have a compasionate Dr. he/she will do what needs to be done, especially if you admit are somewhat dependent on them.

You are addicted to them and they have no affect on you anymore, you need to go to a doctor that will wing you off of them or a rehab(its not a bad thing) at least your willing to get help.

If you have pain and thats the reason your taking them you need to see a pain management doctor to try other things

Hope everything works out

You're addicted to these narcotics and you need help.

Why are you taking them in the first place? You only get a free pass with meds like that unless you've got a serious chronic condition that's excruciatingly painful. You really need help buddy because these are serious meds that can lead to heart problems, gastrointestinal problems, LEGAL problems, and worse

I personally don't think you are addicted to painkillers. You have a physically dependence on painkillers, and a pretty strong tolerance. Your doc probably will wean you off of them. There are people with legitimate chronic pain that are taking that does daily, so for some that is a therepuetic dose. If you are feeling like you need to get off of them, then you should.

The 2 poster above - an addiction is physically and psychological dependence that puts the user and people close to him in danger. An addict typically doesn't seek treatment from a doctor.
