I teach First Aid and am also a Health care professional. I agree with most comments ie go on a course etc but I am a firm believer that FIRST AID is really simple stuff.
For instance .. if a person is UNCONSCIOUS and breathing it doesn't matter whether the cause of his unconsciousness is Diabetes, Epilepsy,Heroine overdose,Faint, Drunk,CVE, etc etc etc the FIRST aider should be considering getting them on their side (ie the recovery position0 I FIRMLY believe that this simple manouvre has and always will save more lives than we will ever know. Having said that I stress again that I am not contesting other comments regarding getting on a course. Anyway MY tip of the day 'Remember the 'Recovery position' and prevent death by choking etc
PS. If you are UK 'Heart start' courses are run nationally and are FREE. they deal with resuscitation and one or two other things and last only 2 hours.

U need to learn that stuff in a class.

how can you learn here , go to a red gross class , there's pleanty were you live as i live there to

No, but I can show you where the Caps-Lock button is.

There is an interactive first aid course here http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/first_aid/in...

They should have classes somewhere in your area, look for one.We have free First aid and CPR Saturdays about every 3 months here.Check with your local hospital. No one on line can tell you in words you need to be shown how to do it properly.

go to first aid classes

You should visit Red Cross for that kind of thing

No, because unless the techniques are properly understood they can be dangerous. For example the Heimlich Manoeuvre for choking, and CPR which should NEVER be done on a conscious person with a pulse.

As everyone has said you need to go to a special class to get proper training otherwise any intervention you do is more likely to hurt the person than help them!

A basic duty anyone can do though is GET HELP!

-if you see someone collapse check it's safe for you to approach them. Dont endanger yourself
-Go over and call to them asking them to open their eyes to see if they are responsive.
- If you cant get them to wake up- CALL AN AMBULANCE

That's mostly all you can do to without the proper training. There are things like opening the airway, checking for breathing, the recovery position and the BLS that can be learnt on courses.

-If a person is bleeding . Get a clean rag and press hard onto the wound to try and slow the bleeding. DO NOT do this if there is any glass or anything else in the wound.

- If an adult is choking. Leave them alone. Usually interference makes the situation worse! If they start turning blue, step up behind them. Clasp your hands into a fist in the centre of their tummy just below the ribs and give a quick hard pull up and back towards yourself.

Just a few things.

The most important thing you can do for a person is to keep yourself out of harms way and to get a qualified medical practioner to them ASAP!

i just got done taking Red Cross First Aid and i know a few soft tissue injury basics. Soft tissue injurys are injurys such as abrasions (scrape aka road rash,) lacerations, avulsions (like amputation) and punctures. Also burns are another type of soft tissue injury. They are special because it can damage the muscle and bone as well as the skin.

To control external bleeding, take a sterile dressing (e.g. cloth, gauze) and apply it to the wound putting DIRECT PRESSURE onto it. Then wrap a roller bandage around it TIGHTLY! Tie it off at the end. If the blood bleeds through the bandage, apply another dressing and bandage. *DO NOT TAKE THE OTHER BANDAGE OFF*, this could cause more bleeding.

To care for wounds that have an embedded object in them, do not remove the object! The object could have broken a blood vessel and that's bad so DON'T MESS WITH IT! Try and wrap a sterile roller bandage around the object, holding the object in place.

The best thing you can do for a burn is ice water! It's amazing! If it is 3rd degree call 911!

Hope That Helps!

Yes get in contact with your nearest St Johns Ambulance they do courses that cover the main aspects of first aid and more your local council should have their details,if you are working see if you can get your company to put you through a course you could then be their first aider.I have done their course it lasted 4days with exam and certs at the end, it has been very use full on numerous occasions

The first thing they will teach you is look after yourself(DANGER) after that you need to find a first aid provider that will teach you how to do things properly.
You can read all the books you want but nothing prepares you like practise.
If you are employed ask your employer to send you for a four day First aid at work course.Good luck but no one can teach you on here,If you are at school ask for one of the Volunteer medical organisations to come and teach you basic life support.Again good luck.

I'm a member of St.John ambulance so hope this advice will help.
for a choking adult ask them to cough, then supporting them with one arm (around the front of the shoulders) give a back slap using the palm of your hand in between their shoulders check if the piece has come free, repeat this 5 times checking after each slap if the obstruction has become free. its the same for a child but judged how hard to slap yourself.
for non breathing adult:- the ratio is 30 chest compressions to 2 breaths, the compressions are given using two hands placed over each other with the fingers interlocked, in the middle of the rib cage (in between the breast) to give the breaths tilt the chin back opening the airway, pinch the nose and give 2 breaths one second in one second out. it is the same for a child but is started with 5 breaths, however only the flat of one hand is used depending on the size of the child, for a baby only 2 fingers.

Your question is I am afraid quite impractical. Unless you are taught properly how to deal with these acute emergencies you are likely to do more harm than good.

If you look in Yellow Pages you can contact your local St. John's/St. Andrews, and they will direct you to first aid courses taking place nearby.

Do not follow the advise of Lizzi on airway obstruction. Back blows went out years ago except for infants. CPR is a class you need every two years(can be required every year by some origination such as ski patrol) so either her instructor needs updating or she does

There are websites that show you basic first aid, however it is advised that you do a training course if you feel that you would like to know. we are in a society now where people are so happy with suing anybody for a quick pound that you may find yourself in trouble, its not always worth it!
