Can i retun from an ankle sprain this Sunday?!

Question: I sprained it playing Sunday when the pile landed on my ankle in the first play of the game.

Me and one other guy play both ways (DT and OL) and we have a very small squad (UK College Football), and at half time he got put out for the season, so I got strapped up, drugged up and returned second half just playing OL, but it was agony.

Monday it was bad so I went hospital and had it x-rayed, no break. Swelling and pain has gradually reduced until today, still some swelling, and only a tiny bit of pain.

Basically my team needs me this weekend, but not as much as they need me the weekend after. This weekend we have a poor team, and the week after a slightly better team, if we win both we are going to the Playoffs.

I can buy a dead good ankle support, take some painkilers and play I think, do you agree? Do you have any advice?

I know I should take 2 or 3 weeks but I dont want to let my team down.

I think you need to look past letting your team down because if you don't heal properly you can be no good for the rest of the season. In my opinion, playing this week may be a little soon.

I have these articles from Brad Walker, a renowned sports injury specialist, which I think will be very helpful for your recovery and injury prevention for the future.

Right now I would recommend the R.I.C.E.R. regime. Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation and Referral (although it already sounds like you have had the opinion of a doctor).

Have a look at some of the things to do to avoid future injury because I think that it is particularily helpful in your situation.

If the pain subsides and you take proper care of your ankle, there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to return in a few weeks.

Best of luck with the ankle and I hope it heals soon!
