Can the machine used in Physical Therapy?!

Question: I've been going in to physical therapy on my shoulder and neck. They've been hooking me up to that machine that gives electric pulses to the muscles. Yesterday, I told them it was giving me too strong of pulses up my neck into my brain.
I've had a terrible headache sense! And my eyes feel like the eyeballs won't sit still...........like fluttering.
Can this sort of therapy do harm to the brain and eyes?

There is no indication that electrical stimulation as used in theraputic settings has any effect on the brain (other than neurotransmitter regulation which acutally a good thing). It works primarily at a superficial level and has no direct contact to the central nervous system. It has an indirect contact with the spinal cord..(.specifically to the location where pain inhibitation takes place) and an indirect, indirect contact with the brain. You should be fine.

However, I will say that it was ignorant of the therapist to ignore your request to decrease the level of stimulation. When used, the patient should always be comfortable.

Furthermore, passive modalities really no longer have any place in the role of treatment of neck and back pain. They do nothing to correct the underlying problem and are meant as a temporary measure only. Research after research study continues to prove their ineffectiveness of providing anything beyond immediate, short term relief that will reoccur within minutes to hours of stopping the machine.

Good luck with your recovery

Pleeeease stop going. If you're getting headaches and bulging eyes your body is not responding well!

I'm sure you will be ok if you stop now.

listen to your body!!!

all the best

I agree with banana, that isn't normal. Plus, if you told them it was doing that and they didn't stop, they should go back to school for more training!

Hope you get better soon.

It's a shame you've answered so many questions and yet have less best answers!

Its a simple TENs machine that you can buy OTC. Did you think it was going to rewire your brain? No, no harm, use it all the time and fine excellent relief from it. Good luck
