Smoker for 30 years. Suggestions for ways to quit?!

Question: I need lots of your advice, and best wishes. What has worked for you in the past?

Your desire to quit is there, that is key.
I smoke(d) for 28 years, I first tried to quit about 16 years ago. Tried the patch (twice), I live in Rochester, MN so I had the benefit of Mayo studies.
Did one where they locked my in a hospital for a week or so, actually quit for 6 months that time.
Last January (2007) I tried Chantix, and it is working, but... one thing I learned after so many failures is you need support.
With the locked away thing I had support when I was there, and it worked! With Chantix I used Quitnet (Quitplan in MN) and I really think it was key. My wife and friends didn't smoke so I got support on the forums. It will be 13th months on the 16th of February. Don't really miss smoking while golfing, fishing or other trigger times, but I'm still afraid.
Go for it!!!
Good Luck!

First and foremost, I AM PROUD OF YOU! I really, really, really hope that you know that doing just this, asking for advice and help, you are taking the first step in bettering your life and of course your health! It shows that you DO care, and you DO hope to quit!

My cousin started COMMIT Lozenges and they have really helped. Maybe give them a try? If you do, go to their website first and print out the coupon!

I hope you succeed in quiting! Be strong!

Advices, I don't know how much they will help a 30 years old smoker. Wishes, definitely will not. Sorry but I have never smoked. Since I am a Health Worker here is what I can offer:

Try to decrease by 25 percent everyday till you get there. When you get to zero, buy a placebo cigarette and keep it between your lips every time you feel the urge. That's something you can use even where it's forbidden to smoke. Nobody will protest.

My best advice is to chew gum. Regularly. If you don't like that, try to find low calorie candy. You don't need nicotine gum.

You could also just throw away all your packs of cigarettes.
For one week.. everytime you want to go buy a pack, put the money's worth in a jar. Every single time. And don't take the money out. Everyone has self control.. you just have to discover yours. At the end of the week, see how much money you saved by not buying cigarettes.. and go spend it on something that is useful. That worked for me.

I used that and I just kind of quit cold turkey. Sometimes if there's smoking on TV i get the urge to buy cigarettes but I know I have more control than that... so I don't buy them.

Good luck.. it's very very hard.
