Hi, my daughter has the same thing, it is called Oshgood-Schlatter. It is actually tiny fractures at the top of bone in your calf, and inflammation around them keep the fractures from healing. Her ortho told her she has to live with it, only very severe cases get operated on (small holes drilled in the bone to drain the inflammation). There is a band you can buy and put it around your leg right below the painful area. This will stop the strain from reaching it during activity, and it won't swell so much. This condition occurs during growth spurts, when the person is physically active in sports etc, with a lot of impact on the bone. This is what I have learned from reading up on it..:-)

ahh... you may have what i have osgood schallaters (sorry weong spelling)

search for it heres a link

I had the same thing (I'm a lot older than you, though). What helped me was taking supplements. Fish oil and glucosamine.

Bummer, that sucks!

You may want to get re-examined. you are too young to have these sorts of problems.

In the meantime, start taking Ibuprophen regularly. It is an anti-inflammatory and will help pull the inflamaiton out of the knee. It will also help prevent inflammation if you take it before you exercise. You should also ice it right afterward regardless if it hurts or not. This will also help with the inflammation.

Some great answers already - I'd add that you need to make sure you have very good running shoes if you are a serious runner. You could have stress fractures from the impact of running - I've seen it before.
