I play piano and have been cracking my knuckles since the age of 8. Here's what I've learned:

There's no evidence that cracking your knuckles causes arthritis, but it definitely won't prevent arthritis, either.

Essentially, whenever you crack your knuckles, you're pulling the bones apart a little, which moves the synovial fluid around that cushions your joints--this causes a gas bubble to form. This bubble then pops, which is the sound you hear.

I will say that even though it won't prevent arthritis, it does seem to release some tension that tends to build up in my fingers...at least, that's what it feels like to me. It bugs the heck out of some people, though.

I cracked mine since I was a child and I have arthritis.I dont know if cracking caused it though.

No it releases air between the fingers and knuckles. I guess its sorta bad and sorta good at the same time.

"There is no recorded evidence that cracking your knuckles leads to arthritis - but there are suggestions that it can lead to other issues with the hands later in life."

Nothing worse than a bad habit. Irritates some people but no effects on joints. :)

Like what was mentioned here, it has no medical opinion that it's definitely going to cause arthritis, but.... I have been cracking my knuckles, all of my life. It does feel like it's releasing some sort of tension for me, too.

I recently went to the Dr. because many of my joints (knees, shoulders, wrists) have been hurting. Doesn't help that I'm getting old! But they told me, that since I have always been very thin, and flexible (took ballet as a child, etc) I have been putting more stress on my joints than most people are capable of. And that is wearing down the joints.

When they took Xrays of me, the technician couldn't believe how flexible I was. But that is going to increase my chances of having arthritis, according to the Dr.

And, she said I currently have the beginning of arthritis in... guess where.... my knuckles.
