That depends on how bad it is. If you are having mostly leg pain that radiates down the leg, then surgery will help relieve the pressure. If it is a combo of both leg and back pain and epidural steroid injection can be done up to three times/ 6 months along with PT. Either way, most studies find the same outcome at one year despite both treatments.

It also depends on WHERE the disc is. My husband has a herniated disc which they won't operate on because to get at it they would have to go through his abdomen, remove a rib, move his lung out of the way and go behind his liver. They won't do that until he is unable to walk.
Have you seen an orthopedic surgeon? What did they tell you? What are his recommendations? It also depends on how badly the disc is herniated. Does it have any nerves trapped? You will know if it does. There is no pain on earth like a trapped nerve.
