How do I get him to sleep?!

Question: The past few nights my 8 yr old brother (whom I have custody of) keeps coming down and telling us that he cannot sleep, but can't seem to give us a valid reason why.

We've been in our new home over a month and it's never been a problem before. he is on 25mg Straterra for his ADHD, and last night (when this started up) I forgot about it and he took it 2 hrs later than normal...He usually takes it in the late evening with a snack, so it doesn't upset his stomach, and in case it makes him drowsy (neither have been an issue so far).

Is it possible that taking that one pill late could be effecting his body, causing him to have problems getting to sleep?

I do plan on calling the doctor who wrote the script tomorrow, but I am curious.

Thanks for any help.

I know I took adderall before I was pregnant, and yes it did affect my sleep, it actually made me an insomniac and i developed anxiety from it. however, straterra is not a stimulant, so it is not a direct side effect of the medication. However, it could defintielty have something to do with it. Or maybe your brother doesn't have ADHD, and the straterra is having a negative effect on a different disorder he could possibly have. When mistreated/ misdiagnosed, medication can do very weird things to you. I would discuss it with your doctor. But good luck!

It could definitely be the medication, but asking your doctor would be the best thing to do.

It could be that one pill, like a birth control, it needs to be taken at the same time each day, best thing to do is ask the Doc.

I think so because I take meds not for ADHD but if I mess up one dose I cannot sleep all night then I sleep all day and it messes up my schedule for about a week

Yes It sure can This med is actually a stimulant, but is suppose to help keep children from being hyper and stay on task. it may be that the medication is having the stimulant affect on him and I suggest you have the dr reschedule to say after school or in the morning Good Luck and be sure to check and weigh all the options available there has been a lot of advancement in behavioral modification techniques that are helping young kids cope without the use of meds. good luck to you
