Back to school after appendicitis??!

Question: How long before a child should return to school after appendicitis? My son got his out 13 days ago, and the hospital says he could go back after 21 days, but he feels like he should be back at school tomorrow.

I would suggest taking your child to see the doctor before he goes back to school early. While he may feel all right, he is still recovering from an invasive surgery. His energy levels will be lower than normal.

What was used to close the incision? He may need that extra week to allow the stitching or staples or whatever was used to fully heal so that an infection does occur. That is why I suggest seeing his doctor again before letting him go back early. I would also suggest talking to your child's teachers so that they can keep an eye on him and make sure that he doesn't over-exert himself. He may not be able to participate in recess for a little while.

Listen to the Doctors, going back to soon could cause problems down the line.

21 days? That's a lot. My brother had his removed when he was in 4th grade and went back after a heck of a lot less than that. He also did not have it removed laproscopically.
