I sprained my ankle this morning, can you help me?!

Question: So I freakin sprained my ankle when I was looking for my keys on our book shelf, and I jumped down off of a bench a sprained my ankle. Brilliant I know. Now Im missing school grrr! Sorry, anyway, what can I do to make it heal ASAP. My dad said theres really no point in going to the doctor cause they will just tell me to ice and elevate it and stay off it and all that, but is there anything else that can make it hurry up and heal? Ive been keeping ice on it and I took some pain killer so it doesnt hurt anymore, but I cant really walk on it and its so frustrating! Suggestions people please!!! thanks.

Unfortunately, there's really not much more you can do than ice it and keep it elevated. I'm no doctor, but I've had many a sprain in my life, and that's the only thing you can do to heal without risking further injury.

Now, there is a school of thought that injured parts are meant to be used, not immobilized, but it takes some strong intestinal fortitude to do that. I have played football on a badly sprained ankle, but it hurts like hell and can make things worse.

I would have it wrapped tightly in medical tape to limit movement and contain the swelling as much as possible when I chose to play on it. The same can be done with an ace bandage, but those tend to get rather bulky. But if you can't walk on your ankle now, it will only hurt more if you try.

Give it a couple of days. Keep doing the ice, as boring as that is, and keep your ankle above your heart as much as possible. You will probably be black and blue at the injury site, and that will last a lot longer than the major swelling. Don't be surprised to have some swelling in the joint for weeks or more.

Sometimes these things take a long time to completely go away (ever hear of an athlete's "nagging injury"?), but you should be able to walk on it with significantly less pain by Wednesday. If it still hurts more than a little to put weight on your ankle, borrow a cane or crutch from someone and use that until you feel more stable.

Really, you SHOULD see a doctor to make sure there isn't a broken bone. They'll just take x-rays and give you some pain killers if it's not. But there is a question as to whether getting up, getting dressed, hopping to the car and sitting around in a hospital all day will help you heal any faster. However, if it just seems to get worse over night tonight, you HAVE to go get it x-rayed.

Sorry to hear of your little disaster. I truly hope it heals fast and you are back in class later this week. Meanwhile, have some cute "friend" come over and pamper you. ;-)

Unfortunately there is not. You just have to let it heal. Go buy some cruthes or get a Dr. to give you a walking boot. You should probably have an x-ray just to make sure there are no hairline fractures. When I sprained my ankle I couldn't walk on it for a week. And you don't want to because it will hinder the healing process.

Ice then heat, ice then heat.

I just got over a very severe sprain, pain killers helped but STAY OFF OF YOUR FOOT. Also try to draw the letters of the alphabet with your big toe in the air. Dunno why this helped but it did. Other than that, time.

keep your wait off from it for a day...i know it will stiffin up even more but this is good for the tendons to tighten back up....depending how bad it is it may take less or longer....if its black and blue it may take a week. No need to go to dr..

Ice 20 minutes on 20 minutes off - rest - elevation - wrap (RICE)

Take Ibuprofen (if you can). It actually has healing properties.
