Can a previously smoked in apartment cause me health problems?!

Question: Hey! I am going to be moving into a new apartment by the first of the month. The first time I checked it out I could hardly smell cigarette smoke, but this afternoon after already giving the business my security deposit I so smelled major cigarette smoke. I am recently married and pregnant. I'm so scared now, I don't want to be breathing in toxic air! Suggestions please!!!!!!! I saw some products online that guarantee to get rid of the smell, but I'm still so skeptical. I need help!

If the walls and carpet have not been cleaned, you could have some discomfort from the smell, and your new baby if placed on the carpet could ingest some nicotine, I would insist that the walls and carpet are professionally cleaned before moving in, or get your deposit back and find another place. Good luck.

Not really. Not unless you are highly allergic. I buy rental houses and have to clean out the odor often. I use vanilla candles burning for several hours. It really helps.

The smell of cigarettes is not a health hazard - it is the actual smoke that is the hazard.

As long as you open the windows and air out the place for a little while, there will not be any smoke remaining. The smell may linger for a while (especially if there are carpets/curtains or any other fabrics that have absorbed the odor).

I wouldn't think the air is full of cigarette smoke if nobody is smoking in it at the moment. Maybe the people who cleaned it or painted it had smoked in there. Just air it out, and wash things that may have picked up the smell. It's not going to harm you.
