How long should I keep my weight off of a sprained ankle?!

Question: I sprained it this morning. I already asked a question on how to heal it ASAP. I have been walking on it some, and I know I shouldnt but I cant stand just sitting all day. I am going to get crutches but is it very bad to walk on it the day of the sprain? It hasnt bruised yet which is good, but it is sullen huge on one side. Oh and is a walking boot a good option or is it better to get crutched and stay off it completely?

The first task after getting a sprained ankle is to get the swelling down. This can be accomplished by first keeping all weight off of it (use the crutches, they really help, trust me), then apply compression to it in the form of an ACE bandage. Do not use a walking boot. A sprained ankle is different from a broken one. You do not want to restrict all movement (which a walking boot would do), but have some freedom. If you can, keep it elevated (above your heart--just lie down on the couch and prop your ankle up with a few pillows) to reduce swelling. Also, be sure to ice it frequently.
The best plan for a speedy recovery is to keep all weight off of it for the first week or so (depending on how severe you think the sprain is) then gradually easing your way back to putting weight on it by sort of limping on the crutches--not depending on them completely, but not walking on your own either. That way, when your ankle gets better (probably about 1-2 weeks, if a light-moderate sprain) you will still have movement of it (i.e. it won't be so stiff).

if u have a sprained ankle keep the weight off for a week or 2
