Have you ever broken a thumb?!

Question: My boyfriend threw a temper tantrum and punched the wall, now his thumb is swollen and bruised. It has been swollen for 3 days now, it hurts for him to move it and all along the bottom it is deeply bruised. Nothing seems to be taking the swelling down and it doesn't seem to be getting any better. Do you think it may be broken or just jammed? If it is a broken thumb, is it absolutely mandatory that he go to the doctor? Is there anything he can do to ease the swelling, other than an ice pack, or the pain?

I can almost promise you that it is not broken. He would be in crazy pain. He probably jammed it, that really hurts, but not much that you can do. Tell him to punch a sheetrock wall next time.

He might of just jammed it. I was swinging my hands one day while I was coming back into my house and my pinky hand hit the wall and the bone came out of place. That might be what it is. Did u guys pop it back in? I didn't and it took almost 5 years to heal and it looks normal again now. But I would advise u to go get it popped back into place. even though it's gonna hurt like hell.

I haven't broken a thumb but I did break my pinky. The symptoms sound similar. My parents thought I had just jammed my pinky but it stayed black and blue and swollen for ages. It was actually broken and now my knuckle is twice the size it should be, it would need surgery to correct, and is starting to get arthritic. If I were your boyfriend, I'd go to the Emergency Room and get an x-ray done. It's not "mandatory" but if the bone is broken, it would be easier to fix now than later.

Only an xray can determine if it's broken. He should see a Dr. and I hope he learned a valuable lesson!

Torn ligaments and sprains hurt more than broken bones. I have had more injuries than you can imagine. A doctor will send you to a specialist wich is where he should probably go for punching a wall. you think itwas probably funny but you are pretty and he has a temper bad news bears son. I probably drank hateraide but thats not a posotive thing to do. Teach him how to throw a decent punch killer.
